about
I wrote this song about someone I met on a cross country flight when I was 21. She and I had some very deep conversations flying over the US, and it turned out she was a born-again Christian on her way to Japan to be a missionary. We were both at a crossroads in life, and it felt like she was some alternate version of me from another dimension. When we got to the baggage claim she said, " Can I pray for you?", and proceeded to get on her knees and lay hands on me. I always wanted to write a song about her so I did.
lyrics
Doppelganger Angel
It was like my reflection when I first saw you
Gliding across the tarmac, your hair braided in two
Your belly was bare, you had a light in your eyes
I was watching you, and to my surprise
Your seat was next to mine, I remember thinking it was fate
Took awhile for us to talk after we pulled out of the gate
We were both 21, now I’m 38
Are you still out there playing destiny’s date?
My doppelganger angel prayed in terminal two
Though I don’t believe in much, I believe in you
I was looking for signs headed back to LA
Wondering if my life was back there, and should I stay?
You’d been a wild child, now you’d changed your ways
And found Jesus, that’s how you’d spend your days
I found my cause at Mardi Gras searching for more
Looking for meaning, knocking down doors
But I couldn’t sing there, could not let my voice soar
I was lonely just like before
My doppelganger angel prayed in terminal two
Though I don’t believe in much, I believe
Wherever you are I’m singing to you
That’s how I pray, how I get through
We arrived at baggage claim, you put your hands on me
At the carousel you started, “Lord please”
In the middle of the crowd you got down on your knees
I needed the help, even though I don’t believe
My doppelganger angel prayed in terminal two
Though I don’t believe in much, Oh I don’t believe in much
I don’t believe in much, but I believe in you
I believe in you
